ADOT Motor Vehicle Division Points Assessment

ADOT uses a points system for driving violations.

ADOT Motor Vehicle Division Points Assessment

The Arizona Department of Transportation’s MVD utilizes a points system assessed against your permanent driving record to determine when it is appropriate to suspend your driver’s license as a result of driving infractions. According to the ADOT website, racking up 8 or more points within a single year may require you to attend Traffic Survival School in order to maintain your privilege to drive or may cause your license to be suspended for up to 12 months.

The following is a list of driving violations and their associated point quantities:

DUI – 8 points

Extreme DUI – 8 points

Reckless driving – 8 points

Aggressive driving -8 points

Leaving the scene of an accident (hit-and-run) – 6 points

Failure to stop for a stop sign, traffic signal, or yield to the right of way, causing death – 6 points

Failure to stop for a stop sign, traffic signal, or yield to the right of way, causing serious injury – 4 points

Speeding – 3 points

Driving over or parking in a gore zone – 3 points

All other moving violations – 2 points

Some minor violations may result in zero points against you and nominal fines.

Traffic Survival School is a required “punishment” to prevent a license suspension in certain situations. The MVD will issue you a mandate when TSS is required. Without attending this in-person class, your driver’s license will be suspended. This makes TSS different than Defensive Driving School, which is an optional method used in lieu of paying a traffic ticket.

Severe infractions may be ineligible for Traffic Survival School and will result in an immediate suspension of your driver’s license. It’s also imperative to realize that points against your driving record can also negatively impact your auto insurance rates.
